Ten of the worlds most beloved songs by Thelonious Monk, arguably one of the truly great international piano geniuses have been lovingly laid out here by Esbjörn Svensson, one of the truly great piano talents on the Scandinavian jazz scene, and making their mark around the world as well.
In EST, who previously has released some critically acclaimed albums, we have Magnus Öström on drums, Dan Berglund on double-bass and, of course, Esbjörn Svensson himself, who was an infant, when he practically leaned to walk to the sound of "In Walked Bud". "My father was and is a great jazz lover. So I was very young when I first came in touch with Monk´s music. He’s the kind of composer that can not be avoided", says Esbjörn Svensson.
The listener is taken on a journey through a winter's day. As we witness the progression from before daybreak right through to the depths of night, DuBois draws the listener in
with sounds vividly portraying myriad shifts in the balance of light, leading us through different landscapes, and even making us feel the ever-changing patterns of the weather.
“Europe is different, every country is different,” says violinist Adam Bałdych, “but music is a language which can bring us together, to one place.” He, Dutch pianist Rogier Telderman and French cellist Vincent Courtois combine and juxtapose their different sounds and heritages. That is the central concept behind the trio of equals that they formed two years ago. “We have three very different personalities, we each bring very different colours,” says Bałdych.The group gave its inaugural concert at a festival which carries a strong European mission in its name: the artistic director of the ‘Sounds of Europe Festival’ which had it very first edition in Breda in Holland in February 2018 gave Dutch pianist Rogier Telderman carte blanche to form a new ensemble, and the pianist chose to invite Bałdych and Courtois.
What the title of the album does is to set a tone: Here is the typical Wasserfuhr sound with a relaxed way of playing – the Irish attitude to life shines through again and again.
